Navigating through paintings hanging on the walls, he searches for 120 Power Stars hidden in 15 immense and magical worlds filled with breathtaking obstacle courses, hidden items, puzzles, and an army of enemies. Mario has an extensive repertoire of moves: he runs, jumps, swims, stomps, and punches, and he even performs flips that can help him reach the highest platforms. Special caps provide him with temporary powers, including the ability to fly, and if his cap is snatched away, he'll have to try to reclaim it as soon as possible.
Mario moves freely through grassy meadows, tiptoes through gloomy dungeons, climbs to the top of a snow-covered mountain, walks on lakes of fiery lava, and swims in the castle moat. He can explore an ancient pyramid and even confront the Koopas to win fabulous prizes.
